Feline Mannerisms

from: The Complete Cat

Cats like to establish their own territory so they can feel secure. They have special places for eating and sleeping, as well as places they hunt and play. Cats mark their home base territory in several ways including spraying, leaving urine and feces, rubbing the area and scratching. These marks give off information about their age, sex, and health that will hopefully prevent close encounters with rival cats in the neighborhood.

With their high regard for their territory, cats keep their home bases well tended top in order to get the attention of a prospective mate. Cats are sharp observers and are thus able to master every piece of furniture in the house. Since they're also a creature of habit, they prefer to be pampered, fed and put to sleep in a scheduled manner and are very aware of the actions and routine of their master. Once they've set their routine, don't be surprised if they give you a few reminders if you should forget to do something for them at the appointed time.

Cat's are notorius for being deep and long sleepers and may spend up to 15 hours a day just sleeping -- which means that by the time a cat is eight-years-old, she's only had his eyes open for about three years. There are three different categories of sleep -- a short nap, a long but light sleep, and a deep full sleep and they can easily slip into a deep, full sleep, alternating this with a short nap.

Cats will spend about three to four hours each day cleaning and grooming. The sequence is as follows:

* start by licking their lips

* then they lick the sides of their paws

* when that's accomplished, they rub their head, eyes, and ears with their wet paw

* next they lick their front shoulders and legs

* then they lick their flanks

* followed by licking their genitals

* and then licking their hinds

* and licking their tail

* and finally, it's time to sleep.

Cats prefer to have their naps where they can see what's going on around them. This allows them to awaken quickly if something strange happens. It's a good idea to allow your cat to develop her instincts to find home bases where they'll feel secure.

Developing a home environment suitable for their needs is important. This will allow your cat to feel important and loved which, when you think about it, is no different that what a human needs.
