However, there are times when your cat or kitten can be a bit of a menace, by scratching up the furniture, breaking lamps and ornaments, destroying clothing and carpets and generally making a nuisance of themselves.
As with humans, cats have their reasons for misbehaving, and it will help you, as a cat owner, to know and understand how to deal with your cat's bad behaviors.
Here's a few tips:
Cats Get Bored
A cat is no different than a child when they get bored. Bordom leads to mischief. When they get into mischiev, then it may be their just releasing some of their energy or they may just want some attention.
Regardless, often the simplest way to deal with this if it's an ongoing problem is to set aside some time each day to play with your cat. There is are simple. Get an old shoe string and let her chase it around while you swing it back and forth out of her reach. Or get some balls of rolled up aluminum foil and toss them down the hallway for her to chase. There's lots of options when it comes to playing with your cat and not only does it release her pent up energy, it gives you both a bit of helpful exercise. However, one thing you must not do is to play with your cat immediately after she's been misbehaving, otherwise she'll associate this bad behavior with getting attention.
Cats Tend to be Nocturnal
Most cats are more active at night since they probably spent most of the day sleeping. Therefore, keep your cat busy during the day so she won't disturb you throughout the night, interrupting your sleep because she's wide awake and wanting to play or go outside.
Sexually-driven Misbehaving
If you have a house cat, confined to the indoors, you can plan on lots of misbehavior when your cat starts to go in heat as her longing for a mate kicks in. The only way to eliminate this is to have your cat fixed -- female cats should be spayed and male cats should be neutered. Unless you're planning to have a litter with a female cat, there's no reason not to have this done.
Cats Misunderstand their Owners' Reaction to their Behavior
Cat owners often get angry when their cats misbehaves, perhaps yelling at them for something the cat did an hour ago. This won't work, because your cat is unable to associate past bad behavior with the current scolding. Or you might be too vague trying to show her why you're mad if you catch her in the act. When you reprimand her for misbehaving, she may just think you're trying to play with her. Therefore, it's important that clear that you're punishing her and not trying to play a game.
Keep in mind, cats are always seeking rewards and try to avoid punishments, therefore, never make her misbehavior enjoyable by giving it too much attention. Your cat needs to associate her punishment with her bad behavior and will learn quick enough not to repeat her offence.
Cats Love Playing with Specific Items in Your House
Cats love to play with certain items lieing around the house, such as your curtain, plants or a pillow. However, they also hate certain smells, so protect your stuff by spraing unpleasant smells on those things you want your cat to stay away from.
