Nocturnal Cat Behavior

from: The Complete Cat

If you have a cat that likes to prowl at night, you're familiar with the problems this can cause. He's up all night playing and tearing around the house or he wakes you up early in the morning and want to go outside. After you let him out, he don't want to come back in but when he does come in, he just wants to play some more.

Noctural cats can sometimes be frustrating, but they can be trained to be active when it's more convenient for you.

Here's some steps that should help you deal with this problem:

Adjust his dining time to when you and your family are having dinner since cats tend to go potty not too long after they've eaten. This provides enought time to feed him and then let him out for potty time and playing before you have your own dinner.

When you feed your cat close to the time you go to bed, you can expect to have to get up in during the night to let him out.

Provide him with water until a couple of hour before bedtime. If he drinks water all night long, he's likely going to want out in the middle of the night, or you may wake up to some accidents when you get up in the morning. So work out some playtime in the evening with exercise and activities that helps him to sleep.

If you can figure out a way to prevent him from sleeping in the daytime then he'll sleep during the night. If he's must be up and roaming at night, it's better to keep him contained and not allow him free range throughout the house. Make the environment contained into an area where he can be quietly active.

If you prefer that he doesn't comes into your bedroom during the night, put together something, such as a pop can with a few coins, and rattle it around to make some noise that will chase him out. Cats don't like sudden and loud noises, so after you've used this technique, he won't bother yo anymore.

You greatest asset in this quest to change his sleeping habits from day to night is patience. If you or member of the family discovers him sleeping in the daytime, wake him and start playing with him. If you let him sleep throughout the day, then his noctural activities will just continue.

Of course, this is going to be a problem if he's left alone all day while you're at work. One way to deal with this is to just call your cat at home. You can set up an answering machine so it plays a section you've recorded just for him. A couple of times a day, give him a call which will help to keep him awake during the day and more likely to sleep at night.

Being nocturnal comes natural behavior to some cats, but that doesn't mean you must be a slave to their routine of playing and roaming all. It's takes patience to change their routine, but in the long run it will allow you and your family to get a peaceful night's sleep for a change. Never let your cat train you -- but train him instead and he will cooperate if your patient.
