Origin: Early Abyssinian-like cats were known as rabbit or hare cats because of their markings. Abyssinians have a strong resemblance to depictions of ancient Egyptian cats ands so some people believe they are descended from cats worshipped in Egypt over 4,000 years ago. Others believe they originated in North Africa and were brought to the UK by soldiers returning from the Abyssinian War in the late 1860s. The first Abyssinian to reach the UK was imported in 1868. By 1882 they were listed as a separate breed, but for a number of years the breed was based on type rather than lineage. The first Abyssinians arrived in the U.S.A. in the early 1900s. By the 1930s breeders were taking an interest in the breed. Breeding: Abyssinians are easy to breed. Check out The Complete Cat: Abyssinian Videos
