Cat Breeds A - Z: American Bobtail | ![]() |

|
Grooming: Requires careful combing or brushing every two to three days. Origin: The breed originated in Iowa, USA in the early 1970's through an inadvertent match between a brown spotted tabby, bobtailed kitten named Yodie and a Seal point Siamese female named Mishi. After a period of time the lineage was named American Bobtail and was characterized by its unusual markings that sometimes created tailless kittens. It is possible that one of Yodie's parents was a bobcat, though he probably got his short tail because of a mutation since most wildcat-domestic cat crosses create a sterile first generation male. In 1990 the TICA and American Cat Fanciers Association accepted Bobtails for registration. Breeding: Regardless of how careful breeders are, fully tailed and tailless cats occasionally appear in Bobtail litters. Kittens: Bobtail kittens are quite enthusiastic but not rowdy. They purr all the time and give lots of attention to their owner, including wrapping themselves around the neck, playing with the nose and wanting to sit with you when you are sitting down.
