Cat Breeds A - Z: American Curl

Characteristics: Easy maintenance with sound health and novel appearance due to their curled ears that have made this breed very popular with breeders. Calm and balanced temperament.

Grooming: No particular challenge to grooming the Curl's mid-length, flat lying coat.

Origin: Shulamith, a black, long-haired stray kitten with unusual, swept-back ears was discovered in Lakewood, California in 1981 and within six years, its descendants were competing in champion classes in The International Cat Association.

Breeding: For show standards, allowable outcrosses are unlimited as long as they are not pedigree cats.

Kittens: The gene responsible for curled ears is dominant, which means only one parent needs to be a Curl for this to develop.
