Cat Breeds A - Z: American Wirehair

Characteristics: Short-haired with a distinctive wiry coat. Affectionate, agile and intelligent.

Grooming: Almost no grooming needed.

Origin: Grew out of a spontaneous mutation in a litter of barn cats born in 1966 in Verona, New York. Only one of the litter of six had sparse, wiry hair. The kitten, named Adam sired three litters and the breeders developed the distinctive breed that attained championship status by 1978. The Wirehair mutation is a dominant gene.

Breeding: Since the Wirehair gene is dominant, breeding two cats with the gene will produce a full litter of wirehairs, and breeding a wirehair with a straight-coated will produce wires 50% of the time.

Kittens: Wirehair kittens have tight, curly coats and are playful, healthy and quite robust.
