Cat Breeds A - Z: Bengal

Breeders have from time to time experimented with mating domestic cats to wild cat species. There is some logic to this since all domestic cats are derived from wild cats, but most of these experiments come to nothing.

The Bengal is one of these wild cat hybrids, resulting from crosses between the Egyptian Mau and the Leopard Cat. (Another example of a wild cat mix is the Safari Cat.)

Body Shape: Long and muscular.

Color Variations: All colors

Origins of the Breed: The Bengal Cat Breed was developed in the United Stares in the late 1970's. Its distinctive conformation combines a long muscular body with a relatively samll head. Breeding is difficult as the male kittens are often sterile. Bengals received preliminary recognition in Britain in 1997.
