This breed is strikingly handsome with its coloured mask and its pure white toes, the Birman is still a relatively uncommon breed, but it has its enthusiastic supporters.

Characteristics: The Birman is a large cat though less cobby than the Persian, with long, silky hair which tends to wave on the stomach and doesn't mat or tangle. There's a thick, heavy ruff at the nexk, more marked in American-bred Birmans. The body is medium-long but stocky, the legs sturdy and medium in leagth, the paws round, firm and very large with the toes close together.

The original Birman coloring is the sela point, with a pale cream ground color shading to fawn on the flanks and a lighter cream on the stomach and chest, and darker seal brown points except for the white gloves.

Care: Birmans are famously quiet, placid, gentle cats with great dignity and beauty. Their easy-going nature makes them good show cats unlikely to be fazed by the occasion. They enjoy the company of humans and other household pets and are playful, though not boisterous. Although they're not great hunders and often not enthused about going outside, they dislike being too confined and should not be kept unless they can be offered plenty of space. Their coat needs regular brushing and combing, but since it doesn't mat, this isn't a difficult task.

Distinctive Breed: The two distinctive marks of the Birman are its deep blue eyes and the pure white 'gloves' on all four paws. The Birman's coat pattern is Colourpoint Longhair in style.
