Cat Breeds A - Z: Bombay

Origin: The background to the "invention" of the Bombay was the desire in the 1950's among breeders of Burmese to improve their cats' body type and coat colour. They therefore, against the rules, out-crossed their Burmese to black American Shorthairds, and some of the cats from these matings were later show — and won prizes — in one or the other class. The name Bombay was chosen because of the cats' supposed resemblance in miniature to the black panther of western Indian, and Bombays are sometimes referred to as 'mini-panthers'. The name is appropriate, with their black, shiny coats and, ideally, copper-colored eyes, Bombays are certainly very stricking cats to look at.

Characteristics: Their coat is very short and close-lying with a satin-like texture and a shimmering patent leather sheen. In a mature cat the hairs are jet black to with roots with no white heairs or patches. The body is medium in size and neither cobby or rangy with the mail being larger tan the more dainty female. The legas and tail are medium length and the tail is usually straight. The eyes are round and set wide apart. The eye color ranges from gold to deep copper.

Temperment: Bobays combine the virtues of Burmese and American Shorthairs. They are hardy, affectionate and fairly quiet. However, they do inherit a tendency to be possessive of their owners and jealous of other pets and children. They're not notably active cats and seem happy to live an indoor life provided they aren't left alone for long periods of time, but they take quite well to being walked on a leash. Bombays seem to have very sensitive hearing.l They prick their ears at the faintest sound, and react strongly to sudden loud noises.

Care: Grooming should be done at least weekly with a fine-toothed comb. Bombay litters typically consist of four or five kittens which are usually robust with appetities to match. The kitten coat often has rusty overtones before the jet black adult coat matures.
