Cat Breeds A - Z: Brazilian Shorthair

Origins: Brazilian Shorthairs are belived to be descendants of domestic cats brought to Brazil by European colonists and they have since gone through a number of changes and a newer breed, the Brazilian Shorthair, developed due to Paulo Ruschi, who's experimental projects resulted in the Brazilian Shorthair breed standard being created.

Characteristics: These are affectionate cats, to the point of being clingy, thus they do best with owners who give them lots of attention and affection. British Shorthairs tend to be one-person cats, and are open to bonding with everyone in their owner's household. If the affection they crave isn't met, they can transform from being a frisky, light-hearted cat to a temperament that is suspicious and irritable or it might even try to find a friendlier owner. Brazilian Shorthairs are intelligent and thus fast learners. They are active and playful cats and known for their hunting capabilities.

Brazilian Shorthairs are strong, medium sized cats, neither compact, with round and flat lines such as the Persian, nor thin and elegant like Orientals, such as the Siamese. Their coat is short, and their eyes should matching the color of their coat. Their temperament is playfull, good natured, active and very attached to their owner. They are quite intelligent, and learn things easily. As an accomplished hunter, they are extremely healthy and very envolving, constantly demanding  attention. However, a lack of love and attention can make them peevish and suspicious.

Preservation: The Brazilian Shorthair are not bred professionally and could become extinct. One goal of a breeders is to preserve the cat and always seeking to improve its characteristics. Currently the Brazilian Shorthair has very few breeders, and few genetic improvements.
