Cat Breeds A - Z: British Shorthair

Origin: British Shorthairs are descended from cats brought to Britain by the Romans that breeded with wild native cats and were also crossbred with Persian Cats in order to improve the thickness of their coat. The breed was first defined in the 19th century when British Shorthairs were shown at the 1871 Crystal Palace cat show.

Description and Colors: This breed has dense, plush coats, large eyes that are round and copper in colour. Their heads are round heads and they have full, chubby cheeks and a rounded and sturdy body. They are large and muscular with a broad chest, shoulders and hips, but with short legs, round paws and a plush tail. Males are larger than females, which is quite noticeable. Lifespan of this breed ranges from 14 to 20 years.

British Shorthairs have many colours with the more popular blue variant commonly referred to as the 'British Blue'. Other colours include black, white, red, cream, chocolate, lilac, cinnamon and fawn as well as the colourpoint, tabby and bicolour patterns. British Shorthair cats even come in cinnamon and fawn.

Temperament: British Shorthairs are easygoing with a stable character that makes them easily adapt to apartment living. They aren't terribly demanding when it comes to attention, although they will make their desire to play obvious if they known someone is available to provide some attention.

British Shorthairs are favourites of animal trainers due to their easy going nature and intelligence, and they've even become popular in Hollywood, appearing in both films and TV commercials.

Care: British Shorthair require little in the way of grooming since their fur doesn't tangle or mat easily. However, it's a good idea to brush their coat from time to time, especially during seasonal shedding. British Shorthairs are often prone to obesity when desexed or kept indoors most of the time.
