Cat Breeds A - Z: Burmilla

Origin: The Burmilla is a domestic cat breed that originated in the United Kingdom in 1981 as a cross between the Chinchilla Persian and Burmese breeds.

Description: Burmillas are medium-sized cats and have muscular bodies, round faces, short muzzles and usually weigh between 8-10 lbs. Their eye colour should be green, but there are some cat societies that accept blue with yellow eyes are permitted in kittens.

The Burmillia's coat length has three variants: Standard Coat -- the most common -- is short-hair similar to the Burmese but with a softer, silkier feel. In addition there is the Longhair Burmilla with a semi-longhair coat that is close to the skin, with a soft, silky feel and a large plumed tail. Two Longhair Burmillas mated together always produce Longhair kittens, but Shorthair matings depend on whether the Longhair genes are carried by the Shorthair parents.

The third variant, recently identified, is the Plush, which isn't professionally recognised as being separate from shorthair in judging. But plush kittens have denser fur that doesn't lie close to the skin.

Burmillas have a variety of coat colours -- black, blue, brown, chocolate and lilac. This breed is quite an independent cat that adores its owner and tends to carry over many kitten-like characteristics into adulthood. Their temperament is sociable, playful and quite affectionate, and they get along nicely with children and other animals.
