Cat Breeds A - Z: Devon Rex

Origin: The Devon Rex breed originated in a spontaneous mutation that heppened near Buckfastleigh in Devon, England in 1960. It was the result of the mating of a tortie-and-white stray with a Rex-coated feral male that lived nearby in an abandoned tin mine. The curly coated male kitten, Kirlee, that resulted, was mated with a Cornish Rex with the assumption they were genetically compatible, which turned out not to be so. Therefore, the Devon Rex was developed as a distinct and separate breed.

Appearance: The curl of the Devon Rex fur is caused by a different mutation and gene than the Cornish Rex. Therefore,   breeding of a Devon with a Cornish results in kittens without rexed (curled) fur. Devons are medium sized cats and often referred to as "pixie cats" or "alien cats" due to their unique appearance. They have uncommonly large ears that are set low on the sides of their wide heads, large eyes, and noses that are a bit upturned. Their whiskers different than most cats in that they are very short, often curled so much that it appears as if they have no whiskers. Their body type is distinctly lightly-built and they have long, sturdy legs and toes are unusually large. Their ears are large and slightly rounded and the breed come in all colours.

Behaviour: Devons are active, quite mischievous and playful as well as people-oriented. They've even been described as a cross between a cat, a dog and a monkey. They love to jump high and thus are often discovered in odd nooks and crannies of closets, shelves, and laundry basket. They definitely prefer to be in high places and go to great lengths to get to the highest spot in a room. They're relatively easy to take care of. They are quite intelligent and can be trained to walk on a leash, fetch as well as perform a number of tricks such as jump, heel and tag just like dogs. They are also very affection and love to be close to the head or neck of their human companions.
