Origin: The Exotic Shorthair breed is a relatively recent U.S. hybrid that was created by crossing American Shorthairs with Persians. This was an attempt to bring a more Persian look to the breed, but there was no intention to create a new type.

Characteristics: The Exotic Shorthair is basically a short-haired Persian, though this description doesn't really give credit to its unique appearance. The breed has a Persian's cobby build and distinctive head, but these features are changed by the short, plush coat. The body is medium to large, cobby, deep-chested, and low on the legs, which are short, thick and strong. The tail is short, but in proportion to the rest of the body. The head is round and massive and set on a short, thick neck. Ears are set far apart and low on the head, fitting its rounded contour.

Tempermanet: Exotic Shorthairs are docile and affectionate; playful, but not destructive. They are also intelligent, enjoy home life and easily accept other animals in the family. Exotic's adapt well to indoor life since they're not especially keen on exercise. Grooming isn't as demanding as with a Persian, but regular combing is needed to remove dead hairs.

It should be noted that breeding Exotic Shorthairs is very difficult which has resulted in the breed being relatively small in number. Litters usually number four.
