Cat Breeds A - Z: Himalayan

Origin: The Himalayan or Colourpoint Longhair, is a man-made breed, the result of crossing a shorthaired Siamese with a Persian that produces a longhaired Siamese type. This was first done in the 1920s and early 1930s in Sweden.

Description: Himalayans generally have a cobby build, round head and eyes and long whiskers. Their coat is Persian in type with Siamese markings. Their eyes are always vivid blue. The body is white or cream, but the points come in many different colors: blue, brown, lilac, chocolate, flame, red and cream. The points can also be tabby or tortoiseshell-patterned. Their body is deep-chested and and massive across the shoulders and hindquarters, with short, sturdy legs. Their head is carried on a short, thick neck with a well-rounded face.

Temperment: Himalayan's are sweet-tempered, quite intelligent  andvery social. Since their heritage is from Siamese cats, they tend to be more active than normal Persians. They have the temperment virtues of Persians such as placidity adaptability, unlike Siamese which are included to be more demanding.

Himalayans are also more prone to hairballs than other breeds, and because of so much inbreeding, they're also prone to genetic deformities and a greater possibility for developing inherited problems including joint problems, organ abnormalities, and particularly Polycystic kidney disease among other diseases.

Care: As with any long-haired cat, Himalayans should be brushed daily to keep their coats looking their best and healthiest. In addition, some may need their face wiped daily. Bathing a Himalayan regularly is also recommended to help reduce the amount of oil on the cats fur and skin.
