Cat Breeds A - Z: Japanese Bobtail

Origin: The Japanese Bobtail has been a domestic cat in Japan, Korea and China for at least 1,000 years. The Japanese Bobtail is a natural breed and is often beautifully marked, with its most outstanding feature being the tail structure, which gives it its name. Their shortened, rigid tail is due to a recessive gene and is maintained only by Bobtail to Bobtail matings. There are no genetic problems, such as those associated with the Manx.

Characteristics: The Japanese Bobtail breed has an unusual "bobbed" tail that more closely resembles the tail of a rabbit than those of other felines. This breed's coat is medium length, soft and silky with no undercoat and longer on the tail than elsewhere. The hind legs are longer than the forelegs, but are bent in repose. The nose is long with a gentle dip at, or just below, eye level. The eyes are large, oval and slanted.

Temperment: Since they are a natural breed that has been around for many years, the Bobtail has no particular health problems. They are hardy cats, with a quiet voice. They are very affectionate, often greeting their owners with a wave of their paw. They are active cats that don't like confinement, so they should have some access to the outdoors, even having the opportunity to swim, which they enjoy doing. They can get along with other cats, but tend to prefer their own breed. Grooming is easy since there's no undercoat that can get tangled or knotted.
