Cat Stories

I Will Always Miss You
This is the story of a very sweet cat that I almost adopted. I met her in our back yard, when I was playing out there. I was lying in the grass, and when I sat up, there was the prettiest gray tabby I had ever seen. I carefully moved until I was on my stomach. I stretched my hand out to the cat, and, to my surprise, she approached and rubbed my hand, apparently knowing I meant no harm to her.

We soon were very good friends. She would follow me everywhere, and let me do anything to her, even strap her in my old stroller. I would sometimes cover her with warm dried weeds, and then she would sit there until I came to get her. Every morning she would wait outside the door for me to wake up and come to play. I fed her every day, and loved her very much.

We had her records at the veterinarian's office , and were working on making her an indoor cat instead of the stray I met. She finally came to us on a Monday. The veterinarian's office was open the next day, but we never could bring her in to get her checked. She died the next day. I was very sad. We buried her in the backyard where she would sit and wait for me when I went to pick raspberries.

I will always miss you, Miss Kitty.

The Phoenix and My Son
I have three cats and one of them is Phoenix. Phoenix was born on Valentine's Day, and he's a big kitty...he weighs about 20 pounds. And he taught himself a few tricks.

One trick is that he opens doors if they aren't shut tight. A few years ago, I had a refrigerator with a rubber seal that was going bad. I came home several times in the summer to find the refrigerator door open. I was blaming my son, but it was Phoenix who was opening the door and lying in front of it to cool off!

My son and his cat have a special relationship. My son Bernie is 19 and Phoenix is almost four and a half years old. The only time Phoenix comes to me is when he is hungry. Otherwise, I really don't exist to him.

When Bernie comes home, Phoenix runs right to him and Bernie will scoop him up and ask him how his day was. Phoenix will actually answer him back! Bernie will ask Phoenix all kinds of questions, and each time Phoenix meows back to him in different ways and with different tones to his meows.

Sometimes he'll meow for 10 seconds or more! Sometimes it's really high-pitched, other times very low. Sometimes he throws in a low growl. (I tell Bernie that he must be complaining about the other two cats when he does this.) If Bernie asks him a "yes or no" question, the way Phoenix meows back it sounds just like he says "no."

And I swear sometimes Phoenix actually talks. Usually, when Bernie leaves the house, he'll pet Phoenix. One day Bernie left without petting him and Phoenix came running out of Bernie's room, looked at me and meowed. I could swear he said, "Where'd Bernie go?"

Bernie also said he's heard Phoenix several times where it sounded like he was saying words. They are so comical to watch.

Angel from Heaven
For my 11th birthday I had wanted many things, but the last thing on my mind was a kitten. One day my dad took me to a friend's house and to my surprise his cat had had a litter of kittens. They were about four weeks old and were scurrying around, chasing each other. There was one kitten that caught my eye. She was white with blue eyes.

I went home that day and of course begged my mom like you wouldn't believe. Day after day, I wrote letters to her (even though she was sitting next to me). The letters listed a bunch of rules that I would follow if she would let me have the kitten, and pages and pages of the word "please" on it. She finally let me bring the kitten home.

I had a very special bond with the kitten. I would never let her out my sight and I would follow her and watch everything that she would do. I became close with my kitten and she was my best friend because I didn't attend school and she was the only friend I had. When my kitten grew older she was a half Siamese mix and she was beautiful. I had her for two years.

I went out of town one December and I got a phone call from my mom. She told me that my cat had been taken to get fixed and had squeezed out the window and ran away. My mom couldn't get her back because my cat only liked me! I never found her and I am praying that I can soon find her. I think she's truly an angel from heaven because she made those two years the greatest two years of my life.

Two's a Miracle
My beloved Kato passed away... Being a six year old with no friends and the bully's target at school, I was devastated and would not eat for four days. I lost a grand total of 10 pounds. Finally, two weeks after my seventh birthday, my parents told me we were going to go look for a cat!

All day, we drove to every animal shelter, looking at all types, but I was never satisfied with any one of them. Finally, my dad accidentally took the wrong highway and we ended up in Collinsville, OK. (We live in Tulsa. Collinsville is almost by the Kansas border.) We finally stopped at the Collinsville Animal Shelter. I looked at all the cats, but didn't find one I liked.

My dad went up to the front desk and asked if they had any kittens for me to choose. An old woman heard what he said and told him that her cat had just had a litter of kittens, and she was willing to give one to me. We drove another hour to the outskirts of the town. I don't really remember what happened, but next thing I knew, my dad came in with this little fuzzy kitten, which we wrapped in a wash cloth and took back to Tulsa. He took to our home immediately, but my parents figured that he would be lonely without his sister. So the previous owners collected the other cat, and my dad and I drove to get her.

And here we are today. Seven years later, Kato and Jasmine are happy, healthy old cats who crave attention from everyone. Kato loves people (my whole family), while Jasmine loves objects and rubs herself on anything solid and colorful. In my opinion, I didn't just get one miracle, I got two.

We Went All In
We're a poker family. Texas Hold'em, Crazy Pineapple, Omaha, you name it, we play it. I'm the youngest, 16 years old. We're part Scottish, part Portuguese and we live in South Eastern Massachusetts.

My Portuguese side of the family lives real close to us, so I see them constantly. My Tia Natalia (my great Aunt Natalie) has two cats, a neutered male and a female. The female got pregnant and had her kittens in May, 2005. I knew the female well; she liked me a lot whenever I visited.

I was ecstatic to hear the kittens were born, but never expected my mother to bring one of the kittens HOME. She chose the second-runt, who had such a unique light cream and slightly darker stripe down his back, spots on his sides, stripes on his legs, tail, and tabby M on his forehead. I was immediately taken in. We thought he was a girl at the time, so we named "her" Ruthie.

After a few weeks, "Ruthie" showed an uncanny interest in me and my Dad when we played poker. We'd joke that he'd tell me how much to bet by how many times he padded at a certain color chip. My Dad, not a cat person, really showed affection for the cat by playing with him, teasing him, and even letting him sit by him while he played his poker games on the game console.

On our visit to the veterinarian, we discovered Ruthie was a boy. When I came back home, Dad wanted to name him All-In, and to this day, he's been a member of the family, with my Mom sneaking him treats, me playing with him and watching TV with him, and Dad teaching him the fundamentals of poker.
