Re: Alternative housing - of the gingerbread type - <<hopefully the walls would be durable enough to hold >> I suppose what you use to attach the windows to the walls would be important. Wouldn't want to have your windows fail and turn into a blob, perched on the bottom 'sill' Thanks for making me think, Tom! : ) Aloha! : D...

Re: ideas for bath basket gifts? - Bath bombs are fun. They are made from baking soda and citric acid, neither of which is expensive, plus oil and scents of your choice. You can also put in glitter or flower petals to make them extra girly....

ideas for bath basket gifts? - Hey crafters! I am making 3 baskets this year for my mom and sisters for christmas. I wanted to give them fun, girly bath/beauty items. I made soaps for the first time and am trying to think of other low-budget things I can make/add. At the moment I have soaps, exfoliating gloves and a few candles for each basket. Money is tight for me this year, so I didnt want to spend much more but wanted to add some other things. I am considering some salt/sugar scrubs, but I know at least one of my siblings really doesn't like to use them. So - Any other ideas? Things you have made or seen that you liked? I need some creative boosting ...

Re: Knitting query. - Slipping the first stitch (or some people slip the last stitch) makes a very neat selvedge, but it does nothing to prevent curling....

Re: Knitting query. - Well, what type of fiber did you use? Wool would block the best, and cotton and synthetics will not block much at all. DO NOT IRON KNITTING! You will flatten the stitches. If you want to try it, hold the iron slightly above the knitting and steam it. (You won't be wetting and aggitating the wool, so it won't felt). Don't press! AND DO NOT IRON ACRYLIC, PERIOD!!!!!! Heat will melt the yarn. Really, the only way to completely get that curl out is to add a border wide and heavy enough to pull it back flat. If you crochet, running a few rows of single crochet or a crab stitch around the edge is a great fix. You could also sew a fabric backing, or, e.g. for a scarf, knit another piece, same way, and sew them back-to-back for a flat, and double-sided, scarf....

Re: Alternative housing - of the gingerbread type - > Question - will the melted gummies have the same structural integrity as the jolly ranchers would? < good question. probably not, but I guess I would ask do you need it? hopefully the walls would be durable enough to hold but then again, it may be a little risky....

Re: Where are all the Craft Vixens? - Bourban? Man, I saw her special on FLN this year and she did one with white wine that sounded good to me. Bourbon sounds even better - how much do you use of each? Potato stuffing sounds interesting, I might have to try playing with that one myself. I've had rice stuffing before and thought it was good....

Re: Alternative housing - of the gingerbread type - Okay, I can see that - kind of Triscuts for the straw house, pretzels for the stick house - but what would you use for the bricks (croutons, maybe?)? It would be interesting to do both a sweet version for the dessert table and a savory one for the snack table. Oh, the ideas just keep running in my head. I do find myself leaning towards the savory as the sweet has been done forever - and I love creating new things. Plus, I am a better cook than a baker. I'm not sure I'd be good at making the royal icing, and I would definitely be using graham crackers to build with. I like the idea of the morbid version - that would work great for Halloween! I so love putting together cooking and crafting....

Re: Where are all the Craft Vixens? - I made a turkey ala Martha, with the butter and bourban-soaked cheesecloth baste. Perfect again, lord love her. Made a potato stuffing, shredded whites and sweets instead of bread, for me with wheat allergy, and it was pretty tasty, but needs tweaking. Cranberry chutney again too, always a hit. Fed at least a dozen and still have a couple of meals of leftovers....

I'm diggin' everyone's ideas here : ) Question - will the melted gummies have the same structural integrity as the jolly ranchers would? Re: Alternative housing - of the gingerbread type - actually melted gummy bears makes more sense than the melted Jolly ranchers I was considering gummies melt at a much lower temperature, and since I will be using thin black licorice vines for the "stained glass piping" I run a lower risk of damaging the licorice....

Re: Alternative housing - of the gingerbread type - . I have to admit I hadn't really thought at all about the savory route I was always thinking cookie based but, one could almost make a craker thing with rice cracker "bricks" and triscuit style roof thatching and now, I am amost at the point of going cookie or going cracker I am leaning more toward cookie since as a kid I never did make one, but always admired with such sweet sparkling fascination. and isn't our task as adults to do those things that always fascinated us, but we never did? if not that then what? make money and then die? or to finally give our permission to play in the ways that we were always limited away from? so cookie house it is and lil' tommy is pretty stoked! ....

Re: Alternative housing - of the gingerbread type - It would be really cute to make a kids' scrabble game with bean bags and a big canvas - it'd be a great floor game (or paint part of the floor in a gameroom for the board). I wouldn't want the furniture in my house like that, but it is neat in an office area....

Re: Novelty christmas gift ideas...... - I'm making personalized marble magnets in decorated mint tins they are a big hit for birthdays and so everyone on my gift-giving list is getting a set of those this year. I saw "tea wallets" and think those would be a great gift fo people to bring a few of their fav tea bags around with them or leave in their desk at work. You can include flavoured honey straws too for a quirky touch....
